Advice To The Players is an award winning, community-based, professional Shakespeare company developed by Caroline Nesbitt to provide consistent access to Shakespeare’s plays for the enjoyment and enrichment of northern schools and communities; especially those cut off from the ‘arts mainstream’ by virtue of remote locations, lack of community/school arts support, or economic disadvantages. Since 1999, Advice To The Players has served the northern counties with vibrant, accessible, and comprehensible productions of Shakespeare’s plays that have offered schools and communities the opportunity to experience these great works as they were meant to be encountered – in performance.
Our productions introduce new generations of teens both to Shakespeare’s brilliantly rendered portraits of humanity and to live theatre as an intensely satisfying way to spend an evening. Teen mentoring is the very core of Advice To The Players’ programs. Our mentorships have received recognition from parents and educators as an effective and positive method for reaching teens disenfranchised by difficulties in school, community, or home; and instilling in them a sense of pride and direction as well as increased literacy, better school performance, and a larger sense of belonging in a community with all the responsibilities that entails.
Comprised of a lively combination of theatre professionals, community members, and teens from area high schools, Advice to the Players produces a three show season with performances in March, August and December; two popular summer Shakespeare camps for kids and teens; and in-school workshops which promote literacy and build social skills using he magic and power of Shakespeare’s words and themes. The teens who participate work beside our theatre professionals at every level of production.
Advice To The Players’ mission is:
To bring affordable, accessible classical theatre to underserved areas of the lakes and mountain regions of New Hampshire;
To enable students and community members to enjoy and benefit from the rich language and passionate action of Shakespeare’s plays through participation, public performances, school workshops, and post-show discussions; and
To use classical theatre as a means of enriching our understanding of the English language and our shared humanity.
